Celebrate "Diversity Days" at Butte College

Dr. Temple GrandinCELEBRATE "DIVERSITY DAYS" at BUTTE COLLEGE
MARCH 30-APRIL 3

Butte College is celebrating the one thing we all have in common... our diversity. Numerous workshops, events, speakers and films are scheduled from March 30 – April 3 for annual Diversity Days. The event is free and open to the public.

This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Temple Grandin, a world-renowned autism activist, best-selling author, and animal welfare and behavior expert. She is one of the most accomplished and well-known adults with autism in the world. Dr. Grandin will speak on "Different Kinds of Minds Contribute to Society," a look at how people with unique different ways of thinking, successfully work together to produce many advances. Dr. Grandin is concerned that children who are talented in mathematics may flounder in today's education system. She will discuss how her extreme visual thinking helped her to understand animals. Another type of specialized mind are the mathematical pattern thinkers who created the many advances in physics. Students who have great abilities in either mathematics or art often have difficulties in school. They may get labelled autistic, attention deficit, or dyslexic. Einstein had no speech until age 3 and today, many school systems would have labeled him autistic.

Additional topics and events during the week include "What palm trees can teach us about ADHD," "Rethinking race and gender blindness," "Celebrating TRANSgender* Lives," "Inside the world of foster youth," "A look at masculinity on 2015," "Modern policing and use of force," "Latinos in the melting pot," "Real-life adventures of my LGBT family," along with film screenings, food, and performances.

Dr. Grandin's presentation as well as all other Diversity Days activities are open to the public and free of charge.
